Wait a moment (30 sec for me) and the problem is solved: sending email with SMTP is working with Thunderbird. Check back the Authenticated SMTP item, then click on Save. I go to gmail in my browser and login with no problem. Uncheck the Authenticated SMTP item, then click on Save. It says the username and password are not correct.
